A license legalizes marriage but is not required for a symbolic ceremony, such as a renewal of vows

Residency

You may purchase your license from any County Auditor or Recorder in the same state where you will be married. You do not have to reside in that state or county.

Application

Both partners must apply together in person with picture identification and affirm verbally or in writing that they are eligible to marry. Blood tests are not required in Washington or Idaho.

Time Frames

Washington State licenses are valid three days after issued and remain valid for 60 days. In Idaho there is no waiting period and licenses are valid for one year.

Witnesses

In addition to the Minister, two adults (18+ years) must be present during the marriage and sign the license as witnesses. They do not have to be standing or participating in the ceremony.

Cost

Spokane County charges $162.00, which includes a certified copy (to verify marriage for name changes, taxes, insurance, etc.). Kootenai County charges $31.00 if paying with cash and $32.78 if paying with credit/debit.
